On 31st May, 1917, 20th London of 141 Brigade, 47th Division moved into the front line in the Bluff sector of the Ypres salient . At 2am on 3rd June their trenches were heavily shelled as a result of which, one officer and three men were killed. That afternoon there was an artillery bombardment by the British guns all along this section of the front line and in the inevitable retaliation by the German artillery another officer and two more men lost their lives. One of those killed was Frederick Machen. |
